Physics is lost in the first thirty seconds

Physics at HSC level is rarely lost on arithmetic. It is lost when a student reads a question and reaches for the wrong principle.

Every solution here therefore begins before the numbers do. It names the principle that applies, explains why that one rather than a plausible alternative, and only then starts substituting values.

How the questions are graded

Within each chapter the difficulty climbs deliberately:

1. Direct applications of a single idea

2. Questions combining two or three chapters, the way a board question genuinely does

3. A final few deliberately harder than anything likely to appear — so the real paper feels manageable rather than surprising

The creative-question format is followed strictly, with all four parts set out as they will be in the examination and marks indicated for each part. Knowing that a part carries two marks rather than four changes how much you write, and learning that in practice is far cheaper than learning it in the hall.

Diagrams, drawn properly and drawn often

Where a question describes a physical setup in words, the solution redraws it. The single most useful habit in physics is converting a paragraph into a labelled diagram before attempting anything else, and this book models that habit on nearly every page rather than merely recommending it.

Solution placement is a deliberate compromise — far enough away that you cannot read the answer while attempting the question, close enough that checking does not become a chore you skip. Answer keys hidden at the very back get used less; answer keys printed beneath the question get used too much.

How long it takes

Worked in order, alongside your regular classes, it will take most of an academic year. Worked only in the chapters you are weak in, a few weeks. Both are legitimate — attempting the whole book in the final month before the examination is not.

Practice on a weak foundation only rehearses the mistake. If your understanding of a chapter is shaky, fix that first.

One honest limitation

This book does not teach physics. There are no derivations, no theory sections and no explanations from first principles. It assumes you have a textbook or a course and need volume, range and reliable solutions.
