The two-line display is the feature that matters most in an examination. The upper line shows the expression you entered and the lower line shows the result, so you can confirm what you actually typed before you trust the answer. Single-line calculators hide the input the moment you press equals, and a mistyped bracket then becomes invisible. That check is worth more than it sounds. In a timed paper the common failure is not misunderstanding the physics, it is entering the right calculation slightly wrong and never finding out. Being able to read your own input back is the cheapest error-correction available to you in the hall. It covers the full range needed through HSC and admission level: trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions with degree, radian and gradian modes, natural and base-ten logarithms, powers, roots and reciprocals, factorials, permutations and combinations, and the standard statistical modes for mean and standard deviation. The replay function lets you scroll back through the expression you just entered and edit a single character rather than retyping the whole thing. On a question where you must evaluate the same formula at four different values, this alone saves a meaningful amount of time, and time is the binding constraint in every admission paper. It runs on a single AA battery rather than solar assistance, which is a deliberate preference. Solar-assisted calculators dim and slow in a poorly lit examination hall, and hall lighting is not something you get to choose. Carry a spare battery to any examination lasting more than two hours. A hard slide-on cover is included and it is worth actually using — the most common way these calculators die is a cracked display from being loose in a bag with a water bottle. Also supplied is a one-page guide covering only the functions you will genuinely use in an examination: the mode switches, the memory keys, the statistical entry sequence and the replay function. The full manual runs to dozens of pages of functions no HSC candidate will ever need, and reading it is not a good use of your week. Learn it before the examination, not during.
