It is written for a specific person: someone who reads English comfortably, understands it when they hear it, and then freezes when they have to produce it out loud. That gap is not a knowledge problem and it does not close by learning more grammar. It closes by speaking, badly, many times, in low-stakes situations, until the sentence arrives before the translation does. The units are organised by situation — introducing yourself, asking for something, giving directions, disagreeing politely, apologising, explaining a problem, making a request of someone senior to you, handling a phone call, managing an interview question you were not expecting. Each is a situation you will actually be in, which is what makes the phrases stick. Every unit opens with a short model dialogue, then isolates the phrases that carry it, then puts you into drills where you supply your own answer aloud before checking a suggested one. The drills are open-ended rather than fill-in-the-blank, because a blank with one correct answer trains recall and what you need to train is production. Grammar is picked up along the way, in the order you need it in order to speak. That is deliberately not the order a textbook teaches it. You will use the present perfect early because you cannot describe your own experience without it, and you will meet conditionals late because you can hold most everyday conversations without them. Every dialogue has downloadable audio recorded at natural conversational speed, not the slow, over-articulated delivery of most language recordings. Natural speed is initially harder and is the entire point — you need to hear where stress falls, where a fluent speaker pauses, and which words get swallowed, because that is what you will encounter in a real conversation. Work it aloud. This is not a book you can complete silently on a bus, and a student who works through it reading in their head will finish it having gained almost nothing. Speak every drill out loud, even alone in a room, and especially when it feels ridiculous. The embarrassment of speaking to an empty room is the cheapest form of practice available. A reasonable pace is two units a week with revisiting. Repetition matters more than coverage here — going back through a unit you already did, a week later, does more for you than moving on to a new one. The book is designed to be worked twice. One honest limitation: a workbook cannot give you a conversation partner, and that is the thing you ultimately need. This will build your phrase stock, your listening accuracy and your confidence to open your mouth, but at some point you have to speak to a human being who answers unpredictably.
